By the end of this article you will know how to make a chalkboard that is unique, is of great quality and has a superb finish. So let’s get started!

The material and tools you need:

  • MDF board cut to the size of the finished chalkboard.
  • Sand paper of different grades
  • Sanding block
  • Orbital sander (optional)
  • Chalkboard paint
  • Paint roller
  • Mixing tray
  • Some rags

For smaller boards a 9mm thickness is sufficient, however if you board is more than 800mm x 800mm we recommend a board of 12mm or 16mm thickness. (If you don’t have the tools, any joiner would be happy to cut this board for you)

Step One – sanding:

Sand the outside of the board with medium grade sand paper and finish off with some finer grade sand paper. If you don’t plan to put the board in a frame, the sides should feel nice and smooth when you run your hand over them. If you intend to make a frame for your board you don’t have to sand the sides.

Lay your board on a table and give all the sharp edges and corners a quick sand so they no longer feel sharp.

Then sand the front of the board with a very fine grade sand paper. This surface is the side of the board you will later write on. So the smoother it is the better. If you have an orbital sander, it would be perfect to use it for this process. It’s up to you if you want to sand the back of the board. It’s definitely not necessary.

Step Two – painting:

The painting is an important part if you want to learn how to make a chalkboard. Wipe your board with a dry rag to remove all saw dust particles. Mix the chalkboard paint thoroughly and pour some paint into a mixing tray. For applying the paint to the board we recommend using a microfiber roller. This will give you the nicest and most even finish. Start with painting the sides of your board and cover them with 2 coats. Make sure the paint dries properly between coats. Then paint the back of your board with even strokes. Make sure there is good ventilation in your workshop. The back only needs one coat. Let the paint dry for 30 minutes or so and turn your board over.

Now repeat the same for the front of the board. The front needs two coats. If you are not happy with your finish, you can always paint another coat. You can also sand the front surface of the board between coats if you want to.

Let the last coat dry for at least 24 hours before you use the chalkboard.

Step 3 – Preparing the board for its first use.

Before you start writing on the board with chalk, take one stick of chalk lengthwise and run it all over your new chalkboard, covering it totally in chalk. Then take a wet lint-free cloth and wash the chalk off again. Either dry the board with a lint-free cloth or towel or let it air dry. Now your new chalkboard is ready for its first use!

The most common places for chalkboards are the kitchen, home office and children’s bedrooms or play rooms. However, there is really no limit to where you can use a chalkboard.

I hope you enjoyed learning how to make a chalkboard.
